![]() N5XU, The University of Texas Amateur Radio Club, recently completed its move from a dingy rooftop hamshack on the top of WRW to a nice office location on the 4th floor of the ENS building, just down the hall from WNCG's research laboratories. Thanks to strong support by ECE department chairman Tony Ambler and N5XU faculty advisor Ted Rappaport (N9NB) the UT amateur radio club is now operational with a new location that features a tower above the 110' ENS building, making the new rooftop antenna sight 40 feet taller than its previous location. The amateur radio (also known as "ham") club at UT has been dormant in recent years, but thanks to Ambler and Rappaport's commitment to reviving the club, membership has started to rise steadily. Prof. Mike Becker, a former club advisor, designed the innovative tower mounts that allowed N5XU to construct a tower at the ENS building. Over the past two years, Rappaport and several students have steadily moved equipment, installed coax, and relocated tower sections and yagi antennas to the new ENS location. Several local hams and several UT alumni and friends from the local Central Texas DX and Contest Club have helped with equipment donation for the tower installations as well. This year's club president is Will St. Clair (KE5VXR), a junior advertising major. To learn more about N5XU at The University of Texas, visit the club website.
