Seven WNCG and 6G@UT faculty members received awards or endowments in the 23-24 academic year

Two WNCG alumni were inducted into the IEEE Fellow Class of 2024

Dr. Joydeep Ghosh was a featured speaker at last month’s Brooklyn 6G Summit in New York City.

On October 2, 6G@UT Faculty welcomed Erik Ekudden, Ericsson’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO), and Dr. Eric Wang, Research Leader of Ericsson Silicon Valley, to the University of Texas at Austin campus. The group discussed 6G and the future of mobile extended reality (XR) applications in the 2030 timeframe.  

Drs. Ian Wong and Aditya Chopra, former WNCG students, co-authored Open RAN: The Definitive Guide, published by Wiley-IEEE Press. Wong was advised by Dr. Brian Evans and graduated with his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2007. He is the Director of RF and Wireless Architecture at the Austin, Texas campus of VIAVI Solutions, a WNCG industrial affiliate. Chopra, also advised by Evans and a 2011 ECE Ph.D. graduate, is a Senior Communication Systems Engineer at Amazon Project Kuiper in Austin, Texas. Amazon joined the WNCG Industrial Affiliate Program in 2023.

Todd Humphreys, a professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at The University of Texas at Austin, is the recipient of the 2023 Johannes Kepler Award from the Institute of Navigation.

Erika Susana Alcorta and Matthew Barondeau of Texas ECE have been named winners of 2023 Qualcomm Innovation Fellowships for North America. The QIF program "is focused on recognizing, rewarding, and mentoring innovative PhD students across a broad range of technical research areas, based on Qualcomm’s core values of innovation, execution and teamwork. QIF enables graduate students to be mentored by our engineers and supports them in their quest towards achieving their research goals."

Researchers have modified a commercial virtual reality headset, giving it the ability to measure brain activity and examine how we react to hints, stressors and other outside forces. The research team at The University of Texas at Austin created a noninvasive electroencephalogram (EEG) sensor that they installed in a Meta VR headset that can be worn comfortably for long periods. The EEG measures the brain’s electrical activity during the immersive VR interactions.
