6G@UT Kick-Off Event Planned for 2022

Earlier this year, WNCG launched 6G@UT—a new research center imagining the future of wireless connectivity at the intersection of immersive sensing and machine learning. Planning has begun for an official kick-off event in 2022. The program will include the inaugural public 6G@UT Summit, which will host a variety of talks and panels featuring leaders in industry and academe. Keep an eye on our newsletters and the 6G@UT website for the latest Summit details as they're announced.

Hailey Nichols Wins Graduate Category at Inaugural Female Founder Pitch Competition

WNCG student Hailey Nichols won first place in the Graduate/Postdoc category at last month’s Female Founder Pitch competition. The event was hosted by the Kendra Scott Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute and the Texas Innovation Center.

Philip Tan Among Winners of 2021 Catalyst Award

WNCG student Philip Tan was among the winners of the 2021 Catalyst Award, part of the first phase of the Healthy Longevity Global Competition. Winners were announced by the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) last month at the inaugural Global Innovator Summit.

Jeff Andrews Wins 2021 Joseph LoCicero Award

The IEEE Communications Society has awarded 6G@UT Director Jeffrey Andrews the 2021 Joseph LoCicero Award for Exemplary Service to Publications. The annual award recognizes exceptional contributions to meetings, conferences, publications, globalization, and service to the Society. Nominees have made notable contributions to the quality, scope, or visibility of those publications.

Bovik and Team Recognized at 72nd Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy® Awards

Professor Alan Bovik and his research team were recognized for algorithms that optimize streaming media at the 72nd Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy® Awards. While winners were announced earlier this year, the awards were presented in a virtual ceremony livestreamed on November 4. The team included WNCG alumni Kalpana Seshadrinathan, Rajiv Soundararajan, and Hamid Sheikh; all three researchers completed doctoral programs at the University of Texas at Austin, where they were advised by Bovik.

Sandeep Chinchali Joins WNCG

WNCG welcomes the newest faculty addition to the group: Dr. Sandeep Chinchali. Sandeep Chinchali joined the University of Texas in Fall 2021; he is an assistant professor and Fellow of the Jack Kilby/Texas Instruments Endowed Faculty Fellowship in Computer Engineering in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is also a member of WNCG’s new research center, 6G@UT, and is a core member of the Texas Robotics Consortium.

Xingqin Lin Receives IEEE Vehicular Technology Society Early Career Award

WNCG alumnus Xingqin Lin is the recipient of the 2021 IEEE Vehicular Technical Society Early Career Award. The annual award recognizes outstanding scientists or engineers under the age of 35 who have contributed to the field of mobile radio, motor vehicles, or land transportation. Lin was commended for his “contributions to mobile communication systems and connected aerial vehicles.”

Pneumonia has emerged as a life-threatening complication of COVID-19, accounting for nearly half of all patients who have died from the novel coronavirus in the U.S. since the beginning of the pandemic. Even before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, pneumonia was responsible for more than 43,000 deaths in 2019.
