WNCG Alumnus Sanmi Koyejo recently accepted a faculty position at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He will join UIUC as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science where his research will focus on Machine Learning.

“I look forward to the opportunity to mentor students and pioneer impactful interdisciplinary research,” Prof. Koyejo states.

According to Prof. Koyejo, his time at WNCG was invaluable for securing a faculty position at a prestigious university like UIUC.

“WNCG created a collegial environment of intelligent and motivated students and faculty and provided opportunities for academic discussions, world-class invited talks, classes and collaborations, which have been important to my development as an academic,” Koyejo mentions.

Koyejo also mentions his gratitude towards his WNCG advisor, Prof. Joydeep Ghosh, who Koyejo states, was instrumental throughout the faculty search process, from preparing his application to negotiating an offer.

“I’m especially grateful for Prof. Ghosh’s patient advice through the years,” Koyejo states. “I learned much of what I know about research and mentorship from him.”

Prof. Koyejo also credits other former and current UT faculty for helping him to succeed as an academic, particularly WNCG Prof. Gustavo de Veciana, former UT Profs. Russell A. Poldrack and Jonathan Pillow and current UT Profs. Pradeep Ravikumar and Inderjit Dhillon.

Koyejo will join UIUC faculty in the fall of 2016.
