WNCG's Prof. Jeff Andrews has been named as a recipient of a 2021 Qualcomm Faculty Award. The Qualcomm Faculty Award (QFA) "supports key professors and their research through a $75,000 charitable donation to their university. The goal of the QFA funding is to strengthen Qualcomm’s engagement with faculty who are playing a key role in our recruiting of top graduate students."
The New Yorker feature "How Vulnerable is GPS?" discusses WNCG professor Todd Humphreys' journey uncovering and demonstrating security weaknesses in the Global Positioning System.
Five WNCG faculty members were among the top 100 most influential scholars on the AI 2000 lists. The rankings are based on the Tsinghua AMiner academic data, which indexes more than 133 million expert profiles and 270 million publications.
WNCG continues to grow; this spring, Assistant Professor Jonathan Tamir and Professor José del R. Millán were welcomed to the group.
WNCG professor Jeff Andrews appeared as a guest expert on a recent episode of Gimlet Media's Science Vs podcast, "5G: Welcome to the Revolution?" where he provided background on the next generation of wireless technology.
The episode noted the general public's increased interest in 5G and explored the basics of the technology, addressing the controversies and myths building around the topic.
As the new academic year begins, WNCG welcomes a new faculty member. Assistant Professor Aryan Mokhtari joins the group, having worked most recently as a Postdoctoral Associate in the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS) at MIT. He was one of nine new faculty to join Texas ECE this fall.
Every Spring, Texas ECE’s Awards Banquet celebrates the achievements of the department’s outstanding students and faculty. Three WNCG members were among those honored at this year’s event, which was held last week on May 6.
WNCG faculty member Haris Vikalo has been promoted to full professor.
Vikalo’s was one of five promotions celebrated by the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (ECE) this week; Profs. Deji Akinwande and Ali Yilmaz were also promoted to Professor, while Prof. Mohit Tiwari made tenure as an Associate Professor, and Prof. Mark McDermott was promoted to Professor of Practice.
